Thutmose I Mummy

Thutmose I was the third pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty and reigned over Ancient Egypt from 1506 to 1493 BC. Although he was not as renowned as his successors. Thutmose I played a significant role in Egyptian history, leading numerous successful military campaigns and expanding Egypt’s borders. After his demise, he was mummified in accordance with the Egyptian tradition. His body was  in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

The discovery of Thutmose I’s mummy in 1881 by Gaston Maspero sparked tremendous interest in the international community. It was one of the few royal mummies that had not been looted, giving archaeologists a unique opportunity to study the mummy and learn about Ancient Egypt’s religious beliefs and funerary practices. Thutmose I’s mummy was discovered in the same tomb with his son, Thutmose II, and his grandson, Thutmose III. However, Thutmose I’s mummy was in the worst condition, with evidence of vandalization, and his limbs dislocated. Despite his deteriorated state, scientists were able to extract valuable information from the mummy.

According to ancient Egyptian beliefs

the preservation of the body was vital to ensure the deceased’s successful journey to the afterlife. Therefore, the mummification process was highly elaborate, involving the removal and embalming of organs, wrapping the body in layers of linen, and placing it in a sealed sarcophagus. For Thutmose I, the mummification process was even more intricate as he was a pharaoh. It involved elaborate rituals, offerings of food, wine, and incense, as well as recitations of prayers and hymns by priests. Amulets and charms were also inserted under the bandages to protect the mummy from evil spirits and guide it through the journey to the afterlife.
