Time and Hours in Ancient Egypt

One of the most fascinating aspects of Ancient Egyptian society is their unique approach to time and hours. The ancient Egyptians believed that the universe was cyclical and eternal. That time itself was an endless loop that repeated itself infinitely. Accordingly. They developed a sophisticated system of timekeeping that revolved around the sun and the stars.

The ancient Egyptians divided their day into two parts

The daylight hours and the nighttime hours. The day was divided into twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness. With each hour being approximately the same length. However, the length of the day varied throughout the year, depending on the position of the sun in the sky.

To measure time

In fact, the ancient Egyptians used a sundial that was to measure the length and position of the sun throughout the day. This sundial was a simple device that consisted of a long, narrow rod that was upright in the ground. The shadow cast by the rod was to measure the time of day. The ancient Egyptians also used water clocks to measure time, particularly during the nighttime hours. These clocks consisted of a vessel filled with water that dripped slowly through a small hole at the bottom. The amount of water that was  to pass through the hole controlled the speed of the clock, allowing the ancient Egyptians to measure time accurately.

They believed that time itself was a manifestation of the gods.This belief was reflected in their religious ceremonies and rituals.
