Ancient Egyptian Artifacts

1. The Rosetta Stone – This is perhaps the most famous of all ancient Egyptian artifacts. In fact, the stone is a carved slab of granodiorite featuring inscriptions in three different scripts, including hieroglyphs. It was the key to deciphering ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. 2. The Great Sphinx – In fact, this statue of a mythical creature with the head of a pharaoh and the body of a lion stands over 20 meters tall and is one of the most famous landmarks in Egypt. 3. The Pyramids – The Pyramids were there as tombs for pharaohs and their queens during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. The most famous ones are the Great Pyramids of Giza.

4. Tutankhamun’s Tomb – The tomb of Tutankhamun, also famous as King Tut. In fact, it contained an incredible array of treasures, including his famous gold mask. 5. The Book of the Dead – This papyrus document contained spells, hymns, and prayers that were supposed to help the deceased in the afterlife. 6. Canopic Jars – These jars were to store the internal organs of mummified bodies. They were from stone or pottery. They were often decorated with the faces of gods or the deceased. 7. Ankh – The ankh was a symbol of life in ancient Egypt.

8. Obelisks – These tall, narrow monuments were in pairs outside temples. In fact, they were often in hieroglyphs and were symbols of the sun god Ra. 10. The Colossi of Memnon – These two statues, standing over 18 meters tall, were there to guard the entrance to a temple. They are  from quartzite and are some of the largest surviving examples of ancient Egyptian statuary.
