Ancient Egyptian Art in the Old Kingdom

Ancient Egyptian art is famous for its unique style that was developed during different periods of Egypt’s history. The Old Kingdom period, also known as the Age of the Pyramids, was one of the most flourishing periods of ancient Egyptian art.

In the Old Kingdom, the Egyptian artists’ primary focus was on creating monumental statues and reliefs, and wall paintings.These carvings had a significant role in how the Egyptians’ gods and pharaohs were perceived. The statues represented the pharaohs as powerful and divine beings.

The Pharaoh’s image was very important in this period, with each pharaoh commissioning their sculpture for temples and tombs. The statues represented the Pharaoh in a regal stance, with a stern and focused facial expression.

The Egyptians developed an architectural style called the “mastaba,” which was a tomb with a rectangular base and sloping sides.Scenes of everyday life, like farming and fishing, were also common in the paintings. One of the most significant pieces of art during the Old Kingdom period is the Great Sphinx.  The Sphinx sits next to the Great Pyramids of Giza, and it is 73 meters long and 20 meters high.
