A private day tour to the Nubian Museum in Aswan is a captivating exploration of one of Egypt’s most fascinating and often overlooked cultures. Dedicated to preserving the history, art, and traditions of the Nubian people, this museum offers a deep dive into a civilization that has thrived along the Nile for thousands of years. With its rich exhibits and stunning architecture, the Nubian Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in ancient and modern history.
The History of Nubia
The museum traces the history of Nubia from prehistoric times to the present day. Nubia, located in southern Egypt and northern Sudan, was home to powerful kingdoms like Kush and Meroe, which rivaled ancient Egypt in wealth and influence.
Historical Insight: Nubia was a major trade hub, connecting sub-Saharan Africa with the Mediterranean world. Its people were known for their gold, ivory, and exotic goods.
Ancient Artifacts and Relics
The museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including statues, pottery, jewelry, and tools from Nubia’s ancient kingdoms. Highlights include:
Statues of Nubian kings and queens, showcasing their distinctive regalia and crowns.
Meroitic pottery and inscriptions, reflecting the unique language and culture of the Meroitic period.
Relics from the Kingdom of Kush, including items from the royal tombs at El-Kurru and Nuri.
The Aswan High Dam and Nubian Relocation
One of the museum’s most poignant exhibits focuses on the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s and its impact on Nubian communities. The dam created Lake Nasser, which flooded much of traditional Nubia, displacing thousands of people.
Historical Insight: The museum documents the UNESCO-led rescue mission to save Nubian monuments, including the relocation of Abu Simbel and Philae Temple, as well as the efforts to preserve Nubian culture.
Traditional Nubian Culture
The museum also celebrates the vibrant living culture of the Nubian people. Exhibits include:
Traditional Nubian clothing, music, and instruments, such as the oud and drums.
A replica of a Nubian house, showcasing the colorful architecture and daily life of Nubian villages.
Displays on Nubian festivals, crafts, and agricultural practices.
The Museum’s Architecture and Gardens
Designed by architect Mahmoud El-Hakim, the museum’s building is a work of art in itself, blending modern design with traditional Nubian elements. The surrounding gardens feature statues, a waterfall, and a replica of a Nubian cave.

Aswan is a city in Southern Egypt, and is the capital of the Aswan Governorate.
Our Egyptologist guide will take you to the Nubian Museum which is considered to be one of the most important Egyptian museums. Featuring exhibits and artifacts from the surrounding sites such as the High Dam, the museum is a “must-do” for any visitor to Aswan.
In the early 1960’s, when Egypt built the High Dam at Aswan, Egyptologists and archaeologists the world over heeded UNESCO’s appeal to salvage the monuments of Egyptian Nubia before the rising waters of Lake Nasser submerged them forever. More than sixty expeditions ultimately joined the “Nubian Rescue Campaign”, which resulted in the excavation and recording of hundreds of sites, the recovery of thousands of objects, and the salvage and relocation of a number of important temples to higher ground.
Due to the quantities of material recovered from tombs, temples and settlements, UNESCO was encouraged in the 1980’s to plan a new Nubian museum in Aswan where the objects could be stored and exhibited. It was universally felt at the time that they should be kept as close as possible to their principal places of origin. Nearly 12 years later, the Museum became a reality and opened its doors in November 1997. The architecture of the Museum and the enclosure walls are intended to evoke traditional Nubian village architecture, as it was along the Nubian Nile before the region was flooded by Lake Nasser.
Your qualified Egyptologist guide will show you some of the most important artifacts before allowing you free time to explore the museum at your leisure. The building is set within a landscape, on graded levels, that includes a sequence of waterfalls. When the waterway reaches the lower part of the garden, it divides into 2 branches to surround an open-air stage and amphitheater where already many local and foreign groups have performed. The remaining 43,000 square meters have been planted with palm trees, flowers, and climbing plants, spread over natural rocks.
